Rumpke provides recycling, yard waste, and refuse collections for the City. In addition to weekly citywide collections, the refuse hauler handles large pick-ups and bulk items on a regular basis, with no additional charge to the residents. Recyclable items include newspapers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, paperboard packaging, telephone books, aluminum, bi-metal and steel cans, glass, and plastics. Please see our Collections Guidelines below (updated 12/29/04) for more information on refuse, hazardous waste, recyclable and yard waste collection.

    Collection Schedule Information
In an attempt to continue to provide superior residential waste collection services, the City of Gahanna will be changing the collection day for yard waste. Yard waste pick up will change from Wednesday to Monday effective January 1, 2006.

Refuse, recycling and bulk items will continue to be picked up on Tuesday with NO CHANGE in service.

Gahanna’s current waste hauler, Rumpke, has also released the holiday schedule for 2008.Memorial Day and Labor Day will be the only holidays to affect refuse collection services this year.  As a result of these Monday holidays, yard waste will be delayed one day with collection occurring on Tuesday rather than Monday.

If your trash, recyclables, bulk items or yard waste do not get collected, report the miss the next day to Rumpke at 1-888-786-7531. Missed trash items reported after that time must be held until the following week. The hauler will not be responsible for non-trash items inadvertently placed with or near refuse.

REMINDER: Items should be placed at the curb prior to 6a.m. the day of collection but no earlier than 5p.m. the day before.
    Collection Guidelines
    Waste Collection Guidelines
    • Containers
    • Use heavy plastic bags and/or 20-30 gallon trash cans with lids and handles for refuse containment.

    • Bulk Items
    • Furniture, most appliances, carpeting, mattresses and box springs, and other bulk items will be collected with the regular refuse when placed at the curb. Carpeting and padding must be rolled in a tight bundle AND TIED OR TAPED to facilitate easy handling. Large pieces must be cut into 4-foot lengths. Residents with carryout service must place all bulk items at the curb.

    Household Hazardous Waste
    • Hazardous, corrosive, toxic or ignitable wastes, including medical and hospital wastes, liquids, and sludge, cannot be accepted by landfills due to Federal and EPA regulations and are excluded from collection.

    • Hypodermic needles or syringes used in quantity on a regular basis for medical purposes must be placed in a "Sharps Container" provided by the City.

    • For more information on how to properly dispose of vehicle fluids and other forms of household hazardous waste, as well as, for the collection sites, dates and times please visit the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio's website at: http://www.swaco.org/.

    Recycling
All households have been provided with two recycling bins, one with a lid for light weight items that might blow away. The City is not responsible for lost or misplaced recycling bins. It is advisable to label the bottom of your bins with your street address.

The following list contains items that can be recycled. Items to be recycled can be mixed together in the same bin(s) but should not be placed in plastic bags as they may be mistaken for trash.

    • Paper and Cardboard items
    • Newspapers, glossy ad inserts, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, paperboard (cereal and snack boxes), junk mail, soft drink and beer cartons should be placed together in brown paper grocery sacks. Place sack(s) inside or beside your bin, or in case of rain, place under the bin. Corrugated cardboard can also be placed in the bin.

    • Glass
    • Clear, brown, green and blue glass food and beverage containers and jars are accepted. Please remove caps and rinse; paper labels do not need to be removed.

    • Beverage & Steel Food Cans
    • Aluminum and bi-metal beverage cans, steel soup and food cans and empty aerosol cans are accepted. Please rinse and drain; cans may be crushed to conserve space in your bin.

    • Plastics
    • Plastic items marked 1 thru 7 can be recycled. Please remove all caps or lids and rinse; items may be crushed to conserve space in your bin. Also includes gable-top and aseptic cartons.

    • Aluminum Cans
    • Aluminum, steel and bi-metal food and beverage cans.

    Yard Waste Containers
    • Yard waste can be placed in the paper bio-degradable yard waste bags. These bags are available at Kroger, Home Depot, Lowe's and other grocery and home and garden stores.

    • Residents may designate rigid containers as Yard Waste Only receptacles, but must be labeled as such with a sticker from the Refuse Department.

    • Limbs and branches must be bundled with a light string or twine, in no larger than 2' diameter x 5' length. Tree trunks must be less than 8" in diameter.

    • Sod, dirt and rocks are not considered yard waste and may be disposed of under the refuse guidelines.

    Christmas Tree Disposal
Whole Christmas Trees will be collected with yard waste on pickup day. All decorations and stands must be removed including ornaments, tinsel, garland and lights. TREES SHOULD NOT BE PLACED IN PLASTIC BAGS. The trees will be taken to a compost facility to be recycled into mulch and compost with other regular yard waste collected.

    Appliance Collection
A certified technician must remove CFC (Chloroflurocarbons) from freon containing appliances including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners etc. In preparation for collection, please place a certificate of removal on the item. If CFC removal has not occurred, Rumpke will remove the CFCs if a $50 check is attached to the appliance at the time of collection.
